Ever wondered what those numbers your dental clinician calls out are?
That`s us checking for periodontitis (a fancy name for gum disease!) It sounds scary, but let`s explain.
We’ve spoken about plaque before. We know it causes cavities, but it can also cause periodontitis. That can be just as destructive.
Bacteria-laden plaque eventually hardens into calculus and starts to build up below your gum where you can`t remove it. The rough surface attracts more plaque causing your gums to become swollen and inflamed. Eventually, the chronic inflammation causes the supporting tissues (which hold the teeth in) to break down.
It’s important to note that not everyone gets periodontitis. Some people just get inflammation without losing cells. Periodontitis is intertwined with the overall health of the body. Smoking, systemic conditions such as diabetes, nutrition, genetics and hormonal changes are just some of the things that can push us from gingivitis to periodontitis.
Luckily, periodontitis can be treated, but this is a disease where prevention and early diagnosis are invaluable.

It seems strange to even be thinking about straightening teeth when a child is 7, but early treatment really does have significant advantages if appropriate.
When a child`s mouth was too small for all of their teeth to fit, the traditional approach was to just take some teeth out. In hindsight, this has caused a myriad of issues for some patients as they`ve gotten older especially in regards to the size of the airway.
Science has progressed, and we now know a better way.
Early intervention orthodontics takes a holistic approach by aiming to grow the mouth to fit the teeth, not the other way around.
This approach also takes special consideration in protecting a healthy airway.
